A parliamentary bill championed by Bath MP, Lib Dem Don Foster, will remove licensing restrictions for unamplified music and for amplified music performed to audiences fewer than 200 people between 8pm and 11pm.

The Bill, which allows live music to be played in pubs and other small venues without red tape licensing restrictions, has been welcomed by Abbey Ales Brewery and Pub Owner Alan Morgan

“This Bill will bring huge advantages to small venues that are being crippled by unnecessary licensing restrictions,” he said. “It means publicans will not have to apply for licenses to play music.

A live band especially on a quiet night in the week, could mean the difference between people turning up to a pub or choosing to stay home drinking supermarket beer!

With so many pubs in the UK closing in recent years, this could be a way for some who are struggling to generate enough income to weather the storm.”

Manager of the Assembly Inn in Alfred Street Caroline Walcot said "We have always wanted to do a live music night but in the past we have had to fill in a ten (temporary events notice ) which we have to submit weeks in advance. With the new bill passed we can now start looking for suitable bands, thank you Don!"

Government spokeswoman Baroness Rawlings added that it would be “appropriate” to enact the legislation in time for the Olympics and the Queens diamond’s jubilee.

Christmas delivers for Abbey Ales

It's been another Festive Season to remember for Abbey Ales - the only brewery in Bath - as the company, famous for its brand-leading Bellringer beer, has surpassed all previous records.

Aided and abetted by strong sales of the Christmas seasonal special, Twelfth Night, trading figures have exceeded all expectations, says company MD Alan Morgan. "We celebrate our 15th birthday in 2012, so what a present to receive. Records sales and interest in our beers has never been higher and we are expecting further growth in 2012 with our new distribution agreement with Punch Taverns the UKs largest pub group.”

"Time has passed so quickly since 1997, "adds Alan Morgan.” I remember walking into Ye Olde Farmhouse in Bath after I had just been made redundant and the then landlord John Bradshaw telling me that he was pleased I'd lost my job because we could now start Bath's first brewery!

"We have enjoyed tremendous support from the people of Bath since then and I have been told that many now look upon the brewery as an important attribute for this world heritage city," continues Morgan. "Bellringer is even one of Baths top 100 objects and drinkers and landlords alike have supported us all the way, and we have, in turn, hopefully given them some of the tastiest beers ever produced in these parts. Bellringer and Twelfth Night certainly fall into that category!"

The company's three tied pubs are amongst those local hostelries to benefit from strong demand for Abbey Ales beers. The established Star Inn and Coeur de Lion have been joined by the company's newest - the Assembly Inn - which has added to its reputation as the city's best Sports Bar by also becoming one of Bath's finest 'watering holes' too and have all recorded record sales over the festive period.
Salvation the brewery's latest guest beer a 4.8 dark malty bitter goes on sale in Bath from 6th January.

Bellringer is ringing the bell in Punch pubs

Punch Partnership and Abbey Ales - Bath's only Brewery - have announced that Abbey Ales Bellringer will be available to Punch licensees from Carlsberg's Nashmead Depot.

Bellringer was the first cask beer produced at the Abbey Ales brewery and is still the only one continuously brewed. Successfully launched at the Bath CAMRA beer festival in October 1997, Bellringer is now the top selling cask bitter in Bath and is as popular with the many visitors to the Georgian City as it is with Bathonians.

Alan Morgan MD of Abbey Ales said,”Until recently sales had been restricted to a 15 mile radius of the centre of Bath, but with demand increasing from further afield, our deal with Punch will allow more fans of the premium golden brew to enjoy the beer, even outside of our core trading area.”

Bellringer is notably hoppy ale, amber-gold in colour, refreshingly dry, with a balancing sweetness. The beer has won numerous awards, including 'Beer of the Festival' at The Cotswolds CAMRA festival, The Devizes CAMRA festival and The Bath CAMRA Beer Festival and featured as a finalist in the Champion Beer of Britain competition. Bath MP Don Foster was so impressed with Bellringer he arranged for it to be sold as a guest beer at the House of Commons.

Founded in 1997, Abbey Ales was the first - and is still the only - brewery in the heritage city of Bath for over fifty years, and was the initiative of experienced brewery sales and marketing manager Alan Morgan.

Twelfth Night - On sale in pubs on online from 14th November

Twelfth Night the latest seasonal beer from Baths only brewery Abbey Ales proved so popular last year that the brewery has had to work overtime to keep up with the demand for its seasonal Christmas Ale. Released late November the whole batch sold out on the day it was released. The 5.0% Christmas special has proved so popular it even surprised MD of Abbey Ales Alan Morgan. “Every year we get requests from Bath landlords from mid October about the date we will be releasing Twelfth Night and when they can actually get it to sell. Last year the demand exceeded all expectations. However we are not going to be caught out again this year and our first brew will be double the amount brewed last year with another batch to follow. It proved very popular with visitors to the Bath Christmas market and maybe the cold weather has helped it become such an excellent winter warmer.

One of the first pubs to place an order for delivery throughout Christmas is the city's Crystal Palace Inn who have built up a following over the years for Twelfth Night from locals and visitors to the Christmas market. Martina Perkins Manager of The Coeur De Lion Baths smallest pub has also placed an early order. “ I was told that last year that the beer sold out quickly and constant reminders from Twelfth Night drinkers made the decision for me!" She Said. Likewise Caroline Walcot at the Assembly Inn has also been surprised at the amount that was sold.” I must admit I thought mulled wine would be our biggest seller at Christmas but everyone wanted the Twelfth Night.

Abbey Ales is Baths only brewery and started brewing in Bath in 1997. The brewery now has its own pub chain called Abbey Inns with 3 pubs situated in the centre of Bath. The Star Inn on the Paragon, The Assembly Inn on Alfred Street and The Citys smallest pub the Coeur De Lion in the city centre.

Its regular beer Bellringer is a best selling cask beer in Bath and has won many Camra awards for the 4.2% abv golden hoppy best bitter.

Twelfth Night is described as a delicious winter warmer ruby in colour full of malt flavours and will be available from the 14th November.

Sin Bin

Sin Bin, the latest occasional guest beer from Bath's only microbrewery, Abbey Ales, will be available to the city's top real ale pubs from Friday 7 October.
The 4.5 % abv malty ale, brewed with local Wiltshire Maris Otter malt and finished with Fuggles hops, proved popular with local drinkers and visitors to Bath when it was last brewed for the 6 nations and landlords in Bath have asked for it to be brought out again for the Rugby World Cup.
Managing director Alan Morgan commented: “We always try to brew a range of different beers to complement our best-selling Bellringer but meet the demand for Bellringer takes up nearly all of our production. Head brewer Martin Langham has to brew our 'occasional' beers whenever possible and he has managed to slot in Sin Bin. Our regular customers are well aware how quickly our occasional beers sell and, fortunately for us, tend to order early. Lets hope England take us to the final and force us to do another brew!”
Founded in 1997, Abbey Ales is the first and only brewery in the historic City of Bath for over fifty years, and is the initiative of experienced brewery sales and marketing manager Alan Morgan.
Bellringer is the only cask beer continuously brewed at the Abbey Brewery, a golden 4.2% abv best bitter. However monthly guest beers are also produced and, like Bellringer, only delivered to pubs within a 15 mile radius of Bath.
